Default The Creative Mind And AD(H)D. (What you might not be aware of.)

Hello Cghub, Not exactly sure where the best place to post this is, but i suppose 'art discussion' is as good a place as any.

    Any way,

Most people have felt lazy at some point in their life or another. And some of us indulge in our laziness more than others. Staying in bed an extra hour, or watching T.V. when the lawn really needs to be mowed and the garbage taken out, etc. etc.

And as (most of us haha) have come to learn, it hardly pays to be lazy. When work needs to be done its better to do it sooner than later. Especially in the professional world. Concept and computer art being no exception. Choosing not to work at a responsible level usually results with being fired or losing a client and even losing general respect/credibility. the list of negative consequences could go on and on.

Pretty simple/obvious idea for any one who's had a job or a family right? Dont be lazy, and you'll be better off.

But there is a strange 'phenomenon' that still occurs among some humans. There are some who choose to be lazy, for what ever reason or another. And then there are those rare breeds who tell them self time and time again 'im getting all my work done today, right now, no excuses. This is what i want to do, this is what needs to be done.'

And then they find themselves 5 hours later with zero work done. With no rhyme or reason, this person some how managed to avoid the very thing they found most important. And with the realization of how much time was wasted a wave of guilt and frustration sinks in And they either Move on to something new/different, Or the cycle starts over again until something gets scrounged together at the last minute.

Sounds like a very lazy person right? Every act of procrastination probably looks like one poor excuse after another not to get work done. In all likely hood, that person even considers this them self. Even in their eyes they see nothing but laziness and excuses so they tell them self over and over 'Today's a new day where things change.' And this goes on for years of that persons life. Each job needs to be a new job and its always a struggle to stay on task, stay organized, and stay consistent.

Sounds lazy, But this type of behavior has a strong resemblance of some one living with undiagnosed or untreated ADD/ADHD. Which is usually thought of as the type of syndrome associated with hyperactive children or some one who is easily distracted/cant pay attention. And it does associate with those things but it goes far deeper in terms of symptoms and how destructive it can be on an individual who lives with it un-treated.

ADD is really about a persons need to be constantly mentally stimulated in order to function. Usually being very creative and or smart individuals. New tasks and ideas are ones the brain can take hold of easily. People with AD/HD are often able to 'hyper-focus' on a subject more so than other people. Often giving them great talent either in the form of Music, or Drawing, or Engineering, or dance, or any craft that requires a great deal of attention to detail and subtlety. And things of Novelty are an AD/HD person's best friend. But once the novelty wears off, the brain gets 'bored' and disconnects from what ever the task is at hand. But its not happening at quite a conscious level so its very hard for some one with AD/HD to control unless they are aware of it. (and even if they are aware of it) This can be a very hard thing to deal with when you have a job that requires things to be done at a certain time or a certain way. Or even holding a healthy relationship with another person.

Not to mention some one with AD/HD can be very impulsive and prone to addictive behavior. Combine that with an inability to keep a job or healthy relationship and you can have a very troubled/self destructive human being. Granted its a worse case scenario But maybe you get the idea how this can be such a serious thing for some people.

The reason i chose to post/talk about it here on CGHUB, is that i... am some one with such a diagnosis. And Its some thing that is commonly found in 'Creative or Smart' individuals, which CGHUB is full of. And as some one who has been struggling with it my whole life i can tell you, Knowing truly is half the battle. And on an art site full of very capable students (,and possibly even some professionals,) posting thoughts and feelings mirroring so many of the ones i had, i thought this would be a good place to spread awareness.

If your not sure what ADD/ADHD is or you've found yourself with chronic procrastination possibly coupled with depression/an overhanging feeling of underachievement and you dont know why, i highly recommend you check out these links. It could change your life :P

The 1st is just a quick 'test' (but know there is no 'true' test for diagnosis. Only a licensed person can actually diagnose you) and the other gives some really good information.

I'm kind of in the same boat, my friend. I've lost employment because I was unable to take responsibility for my lack of motivation and focus.

I've definitely felt the novelty effect specifically with new employment, but for some odd reason there's very few activities (i.e. drawing, and hilariously enough World of Warcraft) where the effect never wears off for me.

It's kind of a struggle because if I have work I know I need to get done, but I am uninterested in, it's a big hurdle to push myself to do it. It's aggravating too that that roadblock is so insurmountable yet others are able to do it reasonably.

well hey buddy, just know, if you feel somethings wrong, in the end, no one knows you, better than you. And admitting there is a problem can be hard, but very important. Dont be afraid to look for answers when you find lifes problems have gotten too big to tackle on your own
At least I can say from personal experience, as some one who has some bad ADD, ive found it way better to address all the issues surrounding it and seek help than trying to do it all on my own through sheer force of will. (like ive tried for so so many years.) So good luck man! Knowing as much as you can is really half the battle!

Quick question, when you found that you did indeed have ADD/AD-HD, did you get put on medication? and if so did it help you? What does it do? i feel like i have ADD but i am not a fan of being put on medication, it freaks me out.

Personally I found out when I was about 8 or so, my teacher told my dad my sis and I couldn't stay focused so he took us to check it out. I also don't like meds ( i dont even take tylenol lol) so my parents never put me on them, I kinda wish they did bcause they would have helped a lot in school. I'm still not taking meds for it thankfully its not as bad as it used to be I'm 20 now
