    Default Constructive criticism

    Hi everyone,

basically I am looking for some feedback on my artwork from anyone who has some time. Go on to my page to look at all of it if you can, I'm going to post the latest image up here and any more I do.

Don't hold back, I need all the feedback I can get in order to become better, but don't just turn up and say my work is rubbish - I need to hear reasons.

Here's the first one, a mermaid rising from the sea

    Many thanks

Nice piece, but it feels like it was pieced together. The head, hands on the rock, and body/tail in the water don't quite seem attached to one another. Just a guess, but was each part done on a separate layer and then put together?

Yes, the body, head and arms were one layer; the rock was another and the sea was another. I am going to try and paint it all together next time with less or no layers..

I like the overall look of the mermaid and your style. The scales and tail however look a little stiff. The scales are too uniform in size and shading, and the lines of the tail too straight. Try darkening the scales on either side and making them a little smaller to acheive a 3d effect.

          Love the hair!

Great, thanks ! Yeah I struggled a bit with the scales, looking at them they do look a little flat. I think I'll try and re-do them a bit. Thanks for the advice.

I think your painting style is pretty solid but the composition is too straight on. It feels flat. Also the eyes seem too large. The face and hair do feel like they are actually wet though. And am I crazy or does this face bear a resemblance to Tori Amos?

What do you reckon? A different angle perhaps? I made the eyes large for an 'alien' sort of look. I didn't use any reference for the face but I can see what you mean by Tori Amos...

I think you did well then, since she looks like she's not of this world.

Your pen strokes are a bit rough if I may say so, what tablet do you use?

Thanks. I use a Wacom3A5, not sure what you mean by rough?
