Hey I'm an illustration student as well, and my school doesn't offer a specific concentration for concept art, but at least we have a couple concept art classes taught by staff who are working at a game studio. From what we've been taught and what I learned, illustration and concept art both rely heavily on quick visual communication. You can't leave the viewer (art director, or magazine reader) too long wondering what you're trying to say. But concept art takes that even a step further because you have to communicate your idea to a team that will actually utilize your idea instead of just looking at it in the newspaper or in a book. Like imagine you're trying to show someone how a box looks like that's being placed in the background, you'd draw a box in any method and as clear as you can. If it means you grab an image of a box and alter it to the way you want, then you do that. It's all about visual development and not necessarily art integrity. You're just trying to communicate ideas. And there's environment artists, character...prop...vehicle, some people are good at everything, others have their niche.
I don't know if you were looking for basic information or actual details from the industry, which in that case I'm in the same boat as you haha.
