Hello, questions from a student :)

Hi, I'm Anthony and I'm asking some questions to learn more about being a concept artist and also because I'm writing a paper for my class. If you are or have been a concept artist, please feel free to answer any of the questions with your experience. Thanks!
-Do concept artists get to influence other aspects of the project, like game mechanics? story? Or are artists kept in one corner, writers in another, programmers, etc..
-For a Flixel game I made with a friend, I taught myself a bit of programming to understand how to create the visuals for the game. Is there a person in the middle who usually manages this and makes sure the artist isn't designing something that can't be implemented?
-What is the work typically expected from a concept artist per week? Like one environment, or one character, etc.? Who determines this?
-Is the visual design process ongoing throughout the entire development of the project, or does it ever get to a point where the concept artist(s) has done their job?
I appreciate all the replies I can get.
