Thanks Amaakir, I will definitely be incorporating some textures.

Here's another wip, working mostly from bottom up:

      Smile Door to Oblivion

      Hello All.
How to make a door interesting.
Thinking skulls, chains, rust, moss and general dingy atmosphere.

Here's a little progress. Not as much as I'd like though =/
As it is videogame art... I'm going with pixel art. It's gonna be my first real attempt of doing this kind of stuff, so anyone has some advice about this?? Anything would be very helpful

The best advice I can give you is to use Photoshop when making pixel art. If you use Photoshop's pencil tool, you can achieve different levels of opacity and you can create textural detail faster.

            Hey there

Some pretty interesting works and concepts so far.
Well - I think I'm in. Just a bit late, but well

I normally didn't do a lot of sketching before I start with an image - just blocking in some rough shapes and see what I'm able to do with it. Also I try all the time to keep working on an image until I'm kind of happy with it. Therefore I'll show some step-by-step images and the close to final version as well. Not sure if I'll find the time to push my image a bit further…
            will see…

            OK - here we go…
a bit of progress and the close to final image. Hope you'll like it.

            Cheers

            Step-by-step…

o.o wow malo. you killed it man. Awesome door. Im not loving the lightning but that might just be me. Either way good job.

(edit 4/5/12 : and to iterate further i guess i dont like the lightning because i feel it distracts too much from the environment you made. Like its so saturated and bright that when i look at the image all my eye wants to do is stare at the orange. And i think that takes away from the really good job you did with everything else. Maybe there is a way to compromise and give a lightning effect that looks less bright and spectacular? but still adds a desired effect of character/amazement to the door?)
