Default Suggestion Thread

Hello friends! this is an open thread.

Please use this thread to post topic ideas and suggestions. The topics can be as broad as you like as long as its used as a studying topic such as:

-Anatomy (ex:which part of human body?)
-color theory (ex:color schemes?)
-mood (ex: of weather)
-Environment
-composition
-etc..

Strong propositions:
1-Participants post a photo and everyone pick one of the user/photo and do a portrait fitting the theme given (scifi, fantasy...)
2-
3-

    Sounds good.
Since this is called anatomica I say we start with anatomy first. We break it down into two main parts with sections in them, The head and the body

Lets say for example we start with the head.
The first week (or 5 days) it's just construction of the head. The assignment could be something like a) Look at Loomis' book (which is free online). Study the way he constructs the face in pages (19, 23 etc there are around 3 pages where he covers basic construction).
    b) Now find reference of a real head and apply the construction which you learnt to it
    c) Create a head from imagination

That's just sticking to what you said about studying --> applying, which is again as you said the best way to study.

The second week would be the eyes, then the nose, then the mouth and wrapping it all off the last session on it would be do a study of a portrait from reference b) Create a portrait from mind to a finished level, this way you'll put everything you've learnt together.

This will then continue on for the body, torso, neck/shoulders, arms, legs, feet, hands, create a figure, gesture (maybe)

After that there'll be a solid foundation on the figure for the people who followed through, you can give out assignments using loomis books and reference, even the work of the masters.

From there on it can move to clothing and drapery. Some still life sessions in between to build up observation skills and to study colour because without colour you can't understand mood and the envirnoments would lack. After colour is covered you move on to envirnoments and mood and composition since they probably have to come together.

I just think setting it out in an order could mean that the people who follow the whole thing through will be building solid foundations and increasing upon the previous step each time.

Hope that explains what I meant and helps but I am thinking that whichever way you set it out John it'll still be kickass since it's a brilliant idea.

really awesome idea lilnebo, i had something like that in mind already but thanks for saving some of my time and developing it further!

This first study challenge was just to introduce anatomicae obviously, but I will for sure use it after we're done with this first part,

    Thanks again!

And keep them coming guys we're doing this for you so ask what you want to do and give out more ideas!

Self portrait but make your self into some sort of character, have a theme like make yourself into a fantasy character, submit a pic and then do a self portrait we can do sci fi or even a premade world like starwars just for example. I think it would be a good idea to make it sci fi for the whole cghub-verse we got going on here.

What if we make a portrait of another cghub user?

I love this idea beter we should most def have a huge round like that make a thread in here were we post a prof pic and then either we pic or get assigned to us that way to randomly mix it up

Is this jam going to be moving anywhere? It's usually on halt for several
weeks at a time! I don't mean any disrespect at all!

        Hi, Starexai!

I guess it's better to spill it out now than to keep you guys waiting, Choo will be taking over the CharacterFORGE 2D challenges as of now and I'll be leading the Anatomicae challenges

So, to you and to all our Anatomicae regulars...Hi!
It's a great honor for me to help the mods team with the Anatomicae challenges and I'll do my best to keep everyone's interest in the challenges.

I think it's also important to let everyone know that an effort will be made to bring the Anatomicae challenges back to their original spirit: the anatomy of art.

As to your question, Starexai...no, Anatomicae will remain here. It's taken a while to set things straight and to get the gears moving again because of a number of reasons, but Anatomicae will be up and running in no time, I promise, so I hope to see you around here for the challenges!

As of now, all I can really ask all of you is to be patient for a while, it takes a bit of an effort from everyone when these kind of movements happen, but rest assured, the Anatomicae will be back in no time!

        Some suggestions:

        Tis but a flesh wound!:
Scars wounds and injuries are important to understand, especially for those who wish to do action scenes or to tell of a heroes past. By understanding how the flesh heals and forms in adition to the lighting and colour involved these will not only help you to "flesh" out your characters and creatures, but give a subtle understanding of anatomy that can have a drastic impact.

        Night n Day:
Simple in name, but not so easy in execution sometimes. The objective is to understand lighting of an environment in night and day. Participants are to create 2 versions of he same outdoor scene using earth's natural lighting to create a night and day version.

        Calm before the storm:
Objective is to understand water and fluids in general in a state of calm and in a state of action. Participants are to paint/draw a fluid of their choice in these 2 states. Only requirementis that the fluid must be reflective and so this adds another challenge in environmental reflections.

        Life blood:
A rather gruesom and sad part of understanding life is that all things must eventually die. Participants are to draw/paint in colour 2 versions of a human being, one living and one dead. For those who wish to become better at capturing zombies for fantasy usage or portray a cold dead corpse this study will help in understanding how the loss of blood or rather the discoloration of blood flowing throughout the body can affect our appearance.

        Rising tide:
Something more subtle in certain cases, but this is a basic study for understanding how a person or animal fresh out of the water looks drenched and soaked.

        Fog light:
Something those who wish to be storyboard artists and cinematic illustrators. There are man scenes that involve lighting that is blocked full or partially by smoke, fog or some other substance of the gas like nature. you re to paint/draw a scene in or outdoors that displays the understanding of lighting not just on solid/organic objects, but through and on gas like materials as well.

Those are some awesome suggestions, Blindrat, I like them all!
We could thro some silhouette studies for the fog light also and some 2 point lighting in the night and day ideas also.

Lightbulb An Idea on how to adjust Anatomicae.

            Hey Everyone!

An idea that came to mind for the challenges would definitely influence focal points of
anatomy. For Anatomicae, I imagined challenges that relate to character forging,
creature planets, and the 2D drawing jams but in a more anatomical sense.

There are rules for some of the challenges that pertain to height, eye color, hair color,
age, name, back story, etc. Why not create strict guidelines for Anatomicae?

For instance, drawing a fantasy being but following the rule requirements to have 75%
of the anatomy showing with at least two hands or two feet or one of each. Usually
characters are covered up in clothing unless they are a typical warrior and such.

Another example, challenges to paint/design creatures or animals in an anatomical sense.
Dynamic posing should help create a clear sight of the anatomy and how it's affected by
            lighting and texture.

I can write ideas of what challenges we can do in another reply pertaining to this vision
of the way I think Anatomicae can help us challenge ourselves. This way there is a sense
of the person, creature, or organism's anatomy and the ability to compliment the anatomy
with the rest of the energy in the art.

I think challenges like the back anatomy is awesome but to blow it up into a more
personalized vision where the artist isn't driven off their personality. Life drawings are
important but I feel another element of energy radiating from these challenges.

Thank you and respect to Amaakir for stepping up to the plate! Looking forward to more challenges.

@Sterexai I would love to see what you have in mind, please share. Thing is that it has to be carefully done because once you venture in to doing fantasy it easily can stray away from what I at least feel anatomicae should be for which ids the study of what does exist to and take what you learn from that to make other things that would be useful for the other challenges given their own category like Character forge and creature planet.

I have a lrge list of chalenge ideas I'm putting in to each type of challenge and finished my list for anatomicae. So here it is if you wish to use any of them...

            Spiral out-
A perspective study from a one point view in which participants create a circular tunnel lined with spiraling planks that go from the viewer to the center along the inner walls. This deals with texture, depth perception, atmospheric colour, and "fading"

            Headless but not speechless
Participants are to create a scene telling a story or expressing emotion and action only using the body. The head is not to be present at all, this will help people to understand and think about expressing gestures as well as emotion with the body independently of the head.

            Stress and rest
muscles change and squish and tighten ad buldge when partaking in certain actions. The objective of this is to pick any body part and display it being used to push, pull, turn, or lift and also display the same body part at rest. This gets people to understand how weigght and strain affect the body.

            Hot n cold
Temperature is a big part of colour and light. The objective is simple and straight forward, participants are to take a cold scene for the first part and have a soruce of warm light.(ex fire in a cold snowy forest).

            Shall we dance?(2 part)
One thing that is not stressed enough in academics and in studies is interaction between 2 or more subjects. It is one of the harder things to do. This could be practiced by having two parts, a gentle and subtle interaction such as dancing slow and then a second part with an intense interaction such as fighting/wrestling/etc...

            Immortalized(2 part)
Often when creating illustrations and or concept work you'll one day have to make a statue. This is an opportunity to go outsid and explore as many parks and plazas have one or two statues. This study helps to understand how the organic form is translated into stone/bronze/gold/steel/etc and in turn helps t udnerstand texture of materials.

That is the first part of it though; The second part would be to take an image of a living creature posed and med independent of an environment as if you're creating a proposition. Then you are to place this statue in an environment. This helps you to understand not just what you've learned form the previous study, but also to learn how things work colour wise within and without context.

            The shining
Time for some life drawing! Get as may shiny bjects as you can find take a picture as share it with your fellow CGhubers. This scene is your life drawing to do. Try not to have only greys and off whites throw a red underneath put an orange next to that polished pan get funky and think abstract. This study is to help with understanding intense/mild reflective surfaces, colour, composition, and light. Hell while you're at it put yourself in that reflection too ;]

            Ocean of light
This is an awkward study for some, but understanding our world is to understand what is beyond it too. yo are to create a space scene with the requirement of having at least 1 star. Any other object in the scene are up to you.

Evolution of man(5 part challenge series)
You are to do the portrait of a child, a teenager, an adult, then a senior. This challenge would then end wth a fith challenge to see what you've noticed by selecting an individual(yourself or someone random from the internet or a friend) and create the other three stages in their life based on what observations you've made doing portraits prior to the transition challenge.

Weekly/daily body (human and animal)part sub challenge:
I think it'd be great is that while we maintain having weekly challenges for elaborate studies we have mini studies on the side that aren't really polled, but rather everyone and anyone can participate in and do something quick or take their time that day. The way it'd work is that each day a part of a human or animal is chosen whether it be full figure or a finger(s), or goat horns and or cow hooves. It'd be like a public sketchbook.

The way it'd be structured is that there would be a subforum within the anatomicae forum. So one day they would post a thread for doing human noses everyone who wants to draw human noses that day would do so and they can openly give advice an critique each other. When the next game comes the new subject matter thread will be posted and the cycle repeats.

Each thread title would look something like "Study #- Species- Body/body part - date"
