Default question: How do you calibrate your colors on your monitor?

    Hi all,
I've done a space scene for a client, so it s a dark scene but with enought subtility and different tones. I sent it to the printer, and what I received was all darkened, like if I would have put a 30% black layer on top of my layers in photoshop... Its not the first time that I have this problem, images on screen appears more neat then on paper, or often less saturated. The only I find to resolve the problem is to put my source image less darker..but it is ugly...

So, I would like to know if someone know a good tool to calibrate the computer so that what is on paper is the same that on screen, do I have to buy a special software? wich one ?

    Many thanks

Right now I use a freeware called Quick gamma it has helped calibrate my monitor that washes out colors. You can find it here http://quickgamma.de/indexen.html

But one thing is if your color profiles are set on either Photoshop or corel painter or whichever program. Sometimes if those are not adjusted it'll either change your colors every time you save or go back or look strange on someone else's monitor.

In PS go to edit>color settings>
1)On the top settings bar change it to> monitor color
2)go down into the working spaces box> change it to adobe rgb 1998 or apple rgb. These 2 color profiles have a wide gamut of colors and preserve them better.
      3) then ok it! Hopefully nothing weird happens afterward.

      Hope this helps. :]

God sorry for the late reply! I thought I would have a mail or something when somebody reply, but I didn't..Thanks for the advice anyway, my photoshop alreadry was in photosop 1998. What I have finally done to solve my problem was to set my computer color profile manually, it gave me tones more near to real colors. I know it sounds so simple, but I was hesitating to use something else than the Mac presets...
        here is the final result:

I don't Claim to be an expert but.... read this before changing settings. This is how I am set up. If anyone can contradict me, I'd love to hear it.
