Hey this is going to come across rude and trust me that's not my intentions at all. I am just wondering why anatomicae has become another Illustration/character design challenge? I thought the whole purpose of this challenge was that it was supposed to be a study of anatomy. Sure doing these challenges will also improve your anatomy, but we have so many illustration and design challenges that I don't see the purpose of adding any more. Sorry but I am just wondering, why the change?

I don't think that's rude. I agree, I would like to see some challenges based around anatomy.

After some consideration on increasing participation in the Anatomicae board, we decided to pursue a different idea for the board- emphasizing creating challenges that required self-guided research and put a point on making pieces informed by outside sources. Off this, our most recent challenges have been all created by me in pursuit of that goal. In that sense, yes, Anatomicae has changed- and I apologize for that. If you guys are in sum more interested in returning to the old-style challenges, please feel free to PM JohnSilva and let him know.

That aside, I will be talking to one of the content directors about putting Anatomicae back on track with its original purpose, if that proves to be a wanted thing in general.

On the other hand I’m not at all disappointed with the task you made for us. It’s quite a challenge to successfully merge styles not losing their specific values but enhance it.
The title of this challenge - Anatomicae - suggest very narrow subject of study. And I would say that this one showed very distinct approach it, presented us with possibility to get to the bottom of the anatomy of style, which, sadly, none of us really explored.

Andralamusya - I love this particular offering for it's boldness with the source material- and from researching a bit more on the topic, I think you did a fantastic job converting the figure of Hel in a sensitive yet imaginative way.
The tattoo work? Great. The sensitive rendering of the muscles and bone? Also very nice.
I read a few articles (including on handy-dandy wikipedia) to see if there was a material-based decision with her half-and-half body- and lo and behold! ''Half-black and half-flesh colored'' translates awesomely into having her constructed of
cyber-punk metal and bones. Part of me is given a -teeny- bit of pause for the inclusion of the stiletto, but under consideration it works. Ladies of the realm of death are usually depicted somewhere between the alluring and grotesque,
so with that addition of the high heel (along with the suggestive posing of her hands) works out very well. It takes a bold decision to go with a character design that is so unequal and ''lopsided'' in terms of silhouette, but I really do applaud
you for sticking with revisualizing the source material in such a way. I think it worked out very well.

MrBrown - After your participation in the last change, I was super-excited to see you on board for this one as well ). Thank you for your entry!
All things considered, I adore the costume design on this. Something about the poofy pants and the leggings, the collar-helmet, and those steam-pipes crafted to be reminiscent of Viking horns- lots of fun.
The inclusion of Freya's chariot-cats is fun, and as it turns out- is the strongest link between your interpretation and the source material. The fact that they are normal-sized (though that's what is attested to in most depictions of Freyja's cats)
is pretty humorous, especially when considered alongside Freyja's absolutely huge weapon and backpack array. The posing and perspective is also a good touch- We get a great sense of her confidence and regal bearing with that slight
                downwards-looking-up perspective.
Of course, with a bit more refinement in some areas, I think this is a great working image for you. There's enough details and fun costuming/silhouette decisions to make the image stand well on its own outside of the brief.

Nightmarejan - It was a lot of fun watching you work your way through your process.
Your entry is certainly the most readily identifiable in terms of adhering to the ''cyber-punk'' look. Those weapons that are attached (or comprise) her arms have a fun design. Those heavy-looking wings gave me pause for a second,
but considering how heavily invested the character design -is- in cyberpunk (and the otherworldly focus of valkyries), it works on its own merits.
As for the anime flavor of this piece- I went through your gallery and noticed a few other japanese-influenced pictures. By no means take this as a negative or an aspersion against anime-style work, but as you move forward you may
want to think about things like facial proportion and what helps/hurts your image overall. You obviously have the ability to render bodies, hair, and mechanical parts in convincing ways- for me, however, the size of the eye in comparison
to the rest of the face (especially when it's so close to the very middle of the picture frame) sort've detracts from the sensitive treatment of skin and metal throughout the rest of the picture. I imagine in the long run that sort've thing comes
down to aesthetic preferences, however, so follow your heart. :3

uncleshaun - Hi there shaun! Again, I would like to thank you for participating in this challenge, and I again apologize that your entry could not be added to the poll.
Your image has a lot of great working potential and a very solid foundation. I went through your gallery expecting a very particular style for most of your images, considering the very confident way in which you stylistically rendered the muscle/mass of the figure- however it turns out you have a very eclectic range of styles and illustration types. It's nice to see, however, that in all your work there is a certain boldness and confidence in execution- and that you can work in a great range of style.
Getting back to your image, again- great foundation. The outfit and weaponry (while stylishly constructed) does not go as far as it could in terms of establishing the type of character and the world in which they inhabit. Unfortunately (and this is a limitation that extended far beyond the contest), a lot of times as artists we have to beat the viewer over the head with certain design choices to make a concept clear. There's a bunch of ways going about that, ranging from gussying up the outfit with standardly ''viking'' bits- horns, weaveworn, fur- to going completely tongue-in-cheek with a big viking helmet. Outside of the parameters of the challenge, though, this is a nice, compact character design which is easy to read and has a good value range.
