Last year, Illustrated did it's biggest challenge yet, Homage to MiyazakI.

The winning painting by Spikytiger became our banner illustration for the rest of the year, for every illustrated visitor to see. Who will be this year's banner illustrator?

We welcome you all back to the first and biggest illustrated challenge of the year!

A New World

This challenge is of epic proportions so we are giving you whopping month and a half to show us only your best work!

Read carefully below for challenge rules... and let’s make the first Illustrated challenge of the year the best one yet!!

Rules

- Illustrate what a New World means to you. It could be the discovery of a new planet, or large changes to our way our life. Think what a new world means to you, and make something incredible out of it. Get creative and get crankin'!

- All types of illustration open. ( interior pages, card formats, book covers, magazine covers), but this WILL be the banner for the rest of the year, so please avoid extreme formats
( like overtly horizontal or vertical banners, etc.).

- Working File can be any size you want, finals to be no wider than 1000 pixels ( you can include detail shots if you want).

- Post FINAL image in FINALS THREADS ( to be posted later)

- Post your progress in this thread! Don't be shy!

Prize!!

- Winner gets to be the banner artist for the illustrated challenge for a whole year!

Its funny that this contest was posted.. I recently saw this image for the first time right about when Kepler - 22b was announced. At this point I had other worlds on the brain night and day.. Thats where this painting comes from, seems to fit nicely into the category.

lys - great start on this challenge! I like the one with the man in the boat, exploring the swamp land. Its good that you explore other ideas as well!

Here's my initial offering more to come
This world is the remnants of a super massive terrestrial world that was struck by a mass accelerator approximately 2 billion years ago. The resulting devastation created a semi stable series of land masses held apart by the radiation-charged core now generating a repulse gravity field

My old illustration professor used to say stretch the rubber band until it breaks then scale it back by a few degrees. thats what I think you need to do: push your idea until it breaks then push a little more

fyi I think this is a good idea just shove it more to the extreme
