    Description
Did you ever wish you could work with some of the most talented concept artists in the entertainment industry and help bring their visions to life? Now you can: The CGHUB Production Challenge is a "Real World" type challenge where we create situations that you will be faced with in a real job or production environment (game, film, animation), designed to help build your skills and portfolio. This challenge may not appeal to everyone since the concept is predetermined for you, it is focused on honing your modeling & illustration skills and bringing a concept to life. Click here to view the winners of the last Production Challenge on CGHUB.com.

    2D Requirements
For 2D artists, we are looking for you to create an illustration based off of these characters. Imagine that you are working on a game or film, and you are tasked with making a game box cover or movie poster that will get people excited about the project and make them want to learn more about the characters. It's up to you to create a backstory, setup, environment, colors & composition and details for these characters. Even though Adrian has delivered the design, there are still plenty of problems for you to solve. What are the textures and materials on the characters? The color palette? What is their backstory? You can create any scenario you wish, or you could just make them look cool. For inspiration, take a look at some popular game box art and popular movie posters for reference.

    3D Requirements
For 3D artists, we are looking for overall quality of execution, craftsmanship, attention to detail, how well you translated the concept into 3D, and how much character your character has. This is a very challenging concept with many fine details and parts so we have given 4 months time for everyone to create a solid, polished piece. Imagine you are working for your favorite game or film company working on a hot new title, and you are tasked with creating this character. You are given a model sheet and a deadline, it's up to you to deliver. Good 3d artists know that a talented modeler can take a good concept and make it great, and take a great concept and make it amazing. How do you interpret the concept and push it - take it to the next level? That is your challenge here!

This round's concept has been created by the amazingly talented Adrian Smith just for CGHUB.com. Thank you Adrian! Make sure you check out Adrian's amazing portfolio of work to get some inspiration. Also don't forget to grab a copy of Adrian's amazing book "Dark Fantasy" available on Amazon.

    Ends: May 13, 2012

    How to Begin Your Entry
Create a WIP thread under the Production Challenge 2012 Forum with the title "2D" or "3D" Production Challenge 2012: - "username"
    ie. 3D Production Challenge 2012: - Admin
You are required to post WIP images as you go along, so your fellow artists can give you feedback and learn from your techniques.
    Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

    Deliverables
You will be judged on your final renders or screenshots. Since this is a modeling contest, textures are optional. Textures and lighting will not count towards the final though you may create them if you wish. You can render the final image in any program, or take screenshots from your modeling program. Please give us several angles of your final. We are encouraging all modelers to submit turntables of their final entries if possible (you can host them on youtube, vimeo, or other video hosting sites).

Above all else, the moderators and staff of CGHUB want you to have fun with these challenges while growing your skills, and sharing your artwork with the rest of the community. If ever, there is anything we can do to improve these challenges, feel free to share them in the challenge forum or contact any of the following people with your suggestions:

Special thanks to Adrian Smith for creating an amazing concept just for this challenge!

Adrian will be judging the final entries and picking the winners.

    Q&A
    Quote:
I have one question. Do we have creativity freedom to tweak the design a bit? or we doing strictly whats given? Im not saying Major stuff like the gesture of the concept, just some details.

Just like in real productions, often times concepts don't always translate perfectly into 3D and changes must be made for them to be functional and animateable. Things that look right in 2D don't always work in 3D. Use your best judgement to modify the concept where necessary, it's part of the challenge of bringing the character and model sheet into three dimensions, work out out the issues and use your problem solving skills to translate and bring the character to life in 3D.

    Quote:
one thing isn't that clear to me though...do we have to create a new basemesh from scratch or are we allowed to use one provided by mudbox for example?
Please try to create as much from scratch as possible. You won't be disqualified if you start with a generic base mesh, but in a perfect world everything would be from scratch, if you use existing meshes as a starting point please disclose that in your thread so everyone knows what went into creating your model. Voters should take into consideration if a model was created from scratch or had help from an existing base mesh.

    Quote:
    Can I create multiple entries?
You may submit as many entries as time allows, but we encourage you to focus on quality over quantity.

    Quote:
What final topology are we looking for? In-game mesh? vfx shot? raw sculpt?
We are looking for a high res sculpt (so everyone is on a level playing field). From there if you want to go off an texture the character, do a game res version, etc., animate him, that's fine, but you will only be judged on the raw sculpt out of your 3D package. Take a look at the 2010 Production Challenge 3D entries to see what people did there for reference. We'd really like to see a turntable of your 3D model uploaded to youtube or vimeo that you could share as well, but it's not required.

    Quote:
Is there a projected set of dimensions for the box?
There is no set resolution, but we encourage you to follow a standard movie poster or game box cover dimension (that is, longer than it is wide). If you want to get really fancy, you could have the illstration go from the front cover to the back if you want a wider format to work with, but remember if it's on the shelf people will only see the front cover until they pick it up. Using an exsiting cover for a template like this is probably a good idea. If you win, we will ask for the high res version of your file for printing, so make sure your source file is at 300dpi to support printing.

To be clear, you are not expected to do a front, side and back cover, only the front cover of the box or movie poster. You are not expected to create titles or logos either, but if you want to get creative that's ok as long as you provide a final version with and without text.

    Quote:
Should we make a mock-up of the 2d illustration for the box?
You can do a "one sheet" which doesn't have much, or any logo or text, or you can come up with your own title, text and graphics for the project, it's really up to you. If you decide to add logos and text, we'd also like you to submit a version without them, so we can appreciate the illustration by itself (also because text and logo design is an artform in their own rights, and we don't expect you to be able to do everything).

    Quote:
Since we can enter multiple entires are we allowed to enter both the 2d and 3d category? (I'm not sure about anyone else but Id like to try my hand at 3d again if i have time after my 2d entry)
Yes, you may enter both 2D and 3D challenges, multiple times, make sure you create a new thread for each entry so we can keep the organized.

    Quote:
Reading the announcement and the details thread I'm a bit on the confused side as to what type of product we're aiming for. It seems that the emphasis in this is more toward a 3d game or film, but in the announcement it was said to be a model kit of sorts. Just curious as to which direction we're focusing on, because I'd imagine that the process for making a sculpture for a game and a model kit vary and need to have different things kept in mind while modeling.
The 3D winner will have the opportunity to have their model turned into a 3D model kit, we will provide more details about that soon. However, the sculpt should be in the pose provided in the concept. If you need to model the characters separately and then pose them together, that's ok, but at the final submission they should be posed like the concept so everyone is working in the same direction.

    Quote:
this might be a stupid question but are we supposed to do just the beast (like a single asset) or the girl as well (like a collectable model)?
We realize this is an incredibly complex model, ideally we'd like you to model all the pieces and pose them together like the concept, but if you don't get to everything, you will be judged based on the pieces you did finish.

    Quote:
The 3d challenge is only digital?
You may submit traditional entries if you'd like (sculpture, painting), or use a combination of traditional and digital (ie. paint over a 2D drawing or painting digitally). The final judging will only take into account the quality of the final product, not media or program it was created in.

    Quote:
    2D question
So from what I understand we are provided the source meaning Adrians Demon and woman and from there we interpret the illustration however we want meaning scenario style, pose, setting, weapons/items ect. and not just coloring in and texturing Adrians drawing
For 2D entries, please do not just color Adrian's drawing, entries like this will be disqualified. It's up to you to interpret the illustration and add your own story, pose, composition, lighting and setup, based on the original concept drawing.

    Quote:
I need to express the backstory just through the illustration, isn't it? I don't need to write a text to explain it.
Everything should be explained through the illustration, feel free to describe what you are going for in your WIP thread but when you turn in your final the image should speak for itself and no text should accompany the final image.

    Quote:
Can we get the characteristic features/ description of these characters ?
It's up to you to decide the back story of the characters based on the concept given.

    Quote:
    # Can we make him sit on something like stone ?
    # What is the situation going on and what are the characters mind thoughts. ( A small description can be very helpful).
    # Has the Beast captured the girl and gonna kill her ???
It's really up to you to decide what the scenario is based on the concept given! If you'd like to make small adjustments (like adding a base for him to sit on) that's entirely up to you. You may use the characters exactly as they are in the concept or make some subtle personal modifications/interpretations if desired for both the 2D and 3D entries (example: See Furio's entry in the last production challenge: http://cghub.com/blog/view/productio...-adrian-smith/ ).

            Default layout

Anyone know what the dimensions are for a game box cover? Like the slip in piece in an Xbox game case.

Default Do we have to include the name

Do we have to include any typography or heading for the illustration for the cover and what do we call it if so ?
Is it a movie poster or game cover and how do we title it and what sort of other things do we need apart from a great illustration>?

Really cool concept. One thing though, is the demon sitting on anything? When Translated to 3d it might looks as if he is riding piggyback on the slave girl.

haha wicked concept I am totally in... its going to be really challenging and fun all at the same time.

I am also interested in Josh's question, the demon seems to be sitting on something, something with fur it seems but I'm not sure would love a clarification.
