Welcome to the Creature Planets, the CG HUB challenge of exploring worlds beyond our own, and the different species living within them.

Topic #30 :: January 5th 2011
Organism: The Scinos
Planet: Bomor

Deadline: Saturday, Jan. 15th 2010 - 11:59p.m. [PST]

Here are the organism's details. Follow them to the best of your ability

Bioform Overview
This small organism is one of the more remarkable creatures that live in the cave systems of the Bomorian jungle. Almost completely blind, this small carnivore is able to navigate through some of the most mysterious terrain on the planet. Little is known about this small planet. It has existed under the radar of the IWCA for some time. Expeditions are under way to explore is vast jungles and deep oceans.

Bio Notes
Type:Omnivorous Scavenger – mostly carnivorous.
Habitat:Bomorian Caves
Status:Unknown
Social: Solitary
Temperament:Aggressive
Activity Cycle:Constant
Metabolism:Energetic
Reproductive:Oviparous – Producing 8-10 eggs. (These species care for their nests)

Physiological Notes
Size:Small – 3 kg
Morphology:Symmetrical
Skeletal:Endoskeleton
Epidermal: Wrinkled, translucent skin. Absorbs moisture through epidermis.
Limbs: 6 limbs - two seem to be almost useless.
Location of Senses: Centralized on the body
Primary sense: Touch
Secondary sense: Smell (Eyes and their sockets are still apparent but look as though they function very little)

Other Notes:This species is an ancient one. Their kind has adapted to cope with the constant onset of darkness for eons. This creature will eat almost anything it comes in contact with but mostly hunts other organisms throughout the cave system.

IWCA Requirements – The IWCA wants you to depict this species hunting in it’s natural habitat. Showing it's prey is optional.

so, I am not sure if I will call this finished yet, I might just render out the environment and not do the Night vision thing..

Nice start! I really like that you're looking at reference! You might try and take this drawing and exaggerate some of the proportions on the critter - just to make it look a little less like what you're pulling from. This will help make it look a little more alien. Looking forward to more!

yeah I used 2 refrences. I figure the way I work it will look nothing like them by the end of it! I really love the liquify tool in cases like this, then re-render and so on. thanks for the feedback. Hopefully more people will enter in.

          Amazing sketches everyone ^^
Mine's still brainstorming. I think I'm gonna go with the left one where the feeler-grabber mouth opens revealing teeth inside. Haven't thought where I'll place the eyes, nose and "useless" limbs though. I'll develop it further.

          Default amphibious

I think most cave-dwelling creatures live in the water. So I wanted to come up with something vaguely amphibious looking. Here's my first sketch.

          Default some color

Here's the progress since last night's upload. I know the profile view isn't very exciting, but I wanted to show the half underwater view without worrying about water reflections. To counter the boring angle, I'm trying to make the lighting more dramatic by looking at underwater photography. C&C welcome.
