Default 2D - IodineSoup - Explorers of The Clockwork Menagerie

Just thought I'd partake in the challenge.
Took a while to decide, but I settled with doing 2D for my entry. After working with 3D all day, I like to illustrate in 2D as a way to relax.
I have never taken part in a challenge like this before, but I reckon it will be a good motivation to illustrate more and often.

The concept is simple, a group of explorers explores a mysterious clockwork forest that was discovered in the estate of a deceased inventor and all around eccentric, and runs into something they weren't expecting.

Doodling my way to a composition/colour scheme.

Not seeing the "clockwork" part of the clockwork forest, which is a little disappointing because I get these neat images in my head when I think about a clockwork forest... I picture a lot of gears and springs and numbers laying around. But I get it that the mechanical creatures are supposed to be the clockwork part rather than the trees themselves. Definitely work on the midtones and highlights. Pretty dark right now.

Decided to try something a bit more dynamic.
A creature bursting into the scene while the explorers are documenting their expedition.

          Initial sketch.
