Default Pen mode or mouse mode?

Not the deepest of topics, I admit. But I was just wondering. Do you prefer having your tablet pen set on pen mode or mouse mode? Does monitor/tablet size have anything to do with your choice?

Edit: Pen mode = absolute positioning. Mouse mode = relative.

Mouse mode for me.

Pen mode as in the size and opacity changing to the pen pressure and mouse mode as in color and size opaque? I'm not quite sure what you mean by pen mode vs. mouse mode.

I like to set my tablet mapping area really small, since my pen strokes are very short and quick. I like to pan across the screen really fast by making my mapping area smaller. I guess I got so used to my old graphire's 4x6, that I just got accustomed to drawing/working really fast. Plus I like the effect of my strokes when I have it set on pen pressure, doing the quick small movements~

Pen mode as in one point on your tablet has a fixed corresponding point on the monitor. So the center of your tablet is always the center of your monitor, the left upper corner of the tablet always matches the left upper corner of your screen, and so on.

Mouse mode would have no fixed points. Just like a mouse. So if you left your cursor in the middle of the screen, it stays there no matter what part of the tablet your pen comes into contact with next.

I'm the opposite. I like making large sweeping motions when I draw. Mine's 9x12, and I use pretty much all of the area of the tablet.

definitely pen mode for me. for the tablet a mouse mode makes no sense for me. just imagine I would try to shade in mouse mode instead of hatching one area, I would drag my cursor further with every stroke. and I would need to constantly reposition my cursor

By the way, I think if you just call them absolute positioning or relative positioning, it should be clearer what you mean =)

I started on a 4x6 tablet, too, and was worried if I could adapt to the 6x8, as I draw much out of my wrist, but I really love it, and I think I am finally improving my drawing habits my drawing more with my arm. I 9x12 would probably be too big for me, but the 6x8 seems pretty ideal for me right now

Definitely pen mode - I get really confused with mouse mode. I try drawing, and all of a sudden, I've reached the end of my tablet, lol.

Thanks, memod. I've edited my first post to clarify.

I wonder if it makes a difference if you own 2 different sized tablets? Does pen mode get confusing that way?
