    Default Exchange picture

I'm part of a community called The Private Exchange and I'm working on my exchange picture for this month (sorry Myre if you're here and you see it before it's done!)

I'm trying something I have never done in a picture before and that is rather harsh and dramatic shadows. I'm trying to work as best as I can with it so far, but any crits, hints or suggestions would be appreciated - as it's pretty early on in the rendering phase.

I love the dramatic shadows. You did nicely with them. And it's still early but I'll say.. don't forget the reflecting light from the wall on my left, even in the shaded areas.
    Good job so far.

Ah, thank you! I honestly would have forgotten about that or not put it in because I didn't think it would be there. I started putting it in and it's making a huge difference. Thanks again!

Try to also bring in more colours, this will make it easier for you to create contrasts. If you keep it all in the blue range, values will be all you have to create contrast, and your depth might suffer from that.
Another thing you might want to do is to define the knee more, and give the boot a less iconized shape. Of course that depends on the style that you are going for, but at the moment it just stands out to me.
That aside, I think your lighting does not seem bad so far. The reflected light has been adressed before, and that will definitely help, I think. I like your cast shadow on the leg, such things always give dimension to something!

right now the spine of the character seems to lean a tad over to our left (if you draw a line from the middle of his neck to the end of his torso). i think you'd be fine if you moved the head over slightly to our right to at least straighten his posture.
