New Worlds #51:: Crystal Forest Attachment 103341 This is an idea from Patrik_P (Thanks!) out of the suggestion thread, but it also is a crossover with the current Creature Forge which can be found at http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12892 . This environment concerns a crystal forest found on an extremely hot planet composed mostly of diamonds and graphite. (See http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...ize-Earth.html ) Over in Creature Forge they are designing a tank creature that inhabits this world. Here we will be designing the kind of forest that might grow there based on graphite or diamonds. Deadline: midnight December 1, 2012 California time Deadline: midnight December 1, 2012 California time Attachment 103349 Please no tracing. Our rules concerning the use of reference images is the same as that in Drawing Jams: http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4784 though I do not mean to say the use of texture images placed onto a model by a 3D program is forbidden. That practice is more akin to the custom brushes often used in 2D that were based on some shape that arose out of a prior image. Many of the more sophisticated programs have libraries of textures included that were .jpgs originally derived from photographs. |
Seems interesting, I'll try to participate despite of all of my schoolwork. I'm curious what everybody's going to make of this.
Good luck to all! |

Thanks. For some inspiration I will post the public domain image I used to prepare the thumbnails (courtesy of wikimedia commons).
Attachment 103353 As I recall, this is a scanning electron micrograph of snowflake crystals taken by somebody in the U.S. Government, Agriculture Department. Please don't forget to vote in our New Worlds #50 Adventure Redesign Poll which has now begun at http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13133 |
I think that I might have to change my name as it seems everyone is typing it with ck.. :-?
|
Fixed. Sorry. My ancestors would have spelled it with the "c" and it takes hours to make the poll and start the next round. I didn't really have time to triple check everything. Sorry also to the winners of round 49. I don't have time to update the winner's banner right now.

By "forest", do you mean trees and such? because trees don't go well with hot environments.

Attachment 103431 This is a Julia set which is related to the famous Mandelbrot set. The above was generated in silico ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_silico ), but below is the result of a high voltage breakdown within a 4 inch block of acrylic. Attachment 103433 and get a load of Brownian Trees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brownian_tree Why think inside the box when the name of the activity is New Worlds? |
some exploring in black and whites. I have some vague ideas floating around, mainly to work with crystals growing in vaguely tree-shaped patterns. I feel like they're a bit hard to read though, I'll try to work on that. Please do give feedback, I'm here to learn :D

It's a spambot control measure to make you have a few posts before you can put up images.
The place where it tells you how to make the images big instead of as thumbnails is here http://cghub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2248 I think I like the first one better. The second one is almost fully centered which tends to make for a dull composition. It's good that you are thinking foreground, middle ground, background. |
